San Lorenzo Golf Course is located in the unspoilt southeast
corner of Quinta do Lago. It was designed by American Joe Lee, and opened
in 1988 and is known for its beautiful Bermuda grass fairways and its superb condition every day of the year. The
course plays as a figure eight, weaving its way through valleys of umbrella
pines, along the shore of the Ria Formosa estuary (an internationally
important wintering area for migrant birds) around lakes and on past Roman
ruins. Having received countless awards, the San Lorenzo Golf Course is considered one of the best golf courses, not only in Portugal, but ranked worldwide.
While much of the San Lorenzo Golf Course meanders through typical pine woods, it also opens to magnificent ocean vistas and distant mountain backdrops. A good part of the San Lorenzo Golf Course is virtually an extension of the nature reserve of the Ria Formosa Estuary with fairways that run alongside saltwater marshes and freshwater lagoons. This protected environment is the habitat of over 70 bird species, including herons, hoopoes, white storks, coots, black-winged stilts and the rare purple gallinule.
