The front nine of Mar Menor was designed by David Thomas, par 37, 3275 meters, and requires good shots to put the ball in the fairway. The greens are well protected by bunkers and the surrounding lakes.
The back nine was designed by Nicklaus Design, par 35, 2878 m, and has wide fairways and great holes, deserving a special mention to his own “Amen Corner” , a spectacular lake surrounding the holes 13, 14 and 15, making the water in the biggest obstacle to overcome. The rest of the holes are protected by strategic bunkers. Its spectacular design demands a diverse range of shots to successfully overcome the obstacles, making its round an ideal place to hold tournaments, with the extra incentive offered by the various water hazards that embellish the course and its wonderful views. The lakes play an important role as the game progresses, requiring of the player great skills and composure when facing them.
