Marco Simone Golf Club
The property where Marco Simone Golf & Country Club lies, was originally a Roman fortified manor farm, enriched by a tower approximately built in the year 1000 and then completed in the Middle Ages with additional buildings surrounding it, which maintain the same layout of today. When Laura Biagiotti discovered this beauty in the 1970s, it appeared as an abandoned castle. Laura Biagiotti and Gianni Cigna’s project started with the castle and then took on the whole countryside — over 150 hectares. They meant to create a Country Club keeping the gentle and delicate style of the Roman countryside. To this extent, you will find the residences designed with “cotto” bricks and chestnut beams and a golf course of 27 holes fitted for international tournaments, skillfully designed by American golf architect, Jim Fazio.
While walking the holes, it is not rare to encounter animals living in Marco Simone’s natural oasis such as porcupines, foxes, pheasant and herons. Thousands of plant species alos make the flora and landscape unique. There are several holes with views of St Peter’s Dome, offering an experience that adds enjoyment to the game.
This 18-hole par 72 championship course covers nearly one hundred hectares, following the classic rounded hills of the Roman countryside. A skilled and complicated work of shaping was made to transform the old hunting and grazing paths into an exciting succession of holes, while maintaining most of its the original features. Architect Jim Fazio has revealed his great skill by designing two perfect rounds of 9 holes that start and end by the splendid clubhouse, assuring great fun for all players. Indeed, thanks to the wide variety of tees, each hole can be played from a variety of different points, bringing into play always new obstacles and providing a setting that is ideal for both beginners and professionals.
The 9-hole course offers a highly addictive introduction to golf. Specifically designed to allow players to walk the fairways from their first appearances on the green, it can nevertheless offer much to intrigue even more expert players. A level of maintenance that is the same as for a Championship course rounds off this exclusive course.
Marco Simone Golf & Country Club will host the Ryder Cup in 2022.
